Rajkumar Hirani was born into a Sindhi family in Nagpur, Maharashtra. His father, Suresh Hirani, ran a typewriting institute. Hirani completed his schooling in Nagpur and later pursued commerce at Nagpur University. Although his family wanted him to pursue chartered accountancy, Hirani was more inclined toward the arts.
To fulfill his creative aspirations, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, to study film editing. However, due to the limited opportunities in editing, he transitioned into the field of directing and writing.
