- On June 4, 1982, she joined AIADMK and delivered her first political speech “Pennin Perumai” (The Greatness of Women) in Cuddalore.
- She quickly gained popularity due to her oratory skills and charismatic leadership.
2. Rapid Rise in AIADMK (1983-1987) 🚀
- 1983: Appointed AIADMK Propaganda Secretary.
- 1984: Elected as Rajya Sabha MP (served till 1989).
- 1984: Took charge of the party’s campaign as MGR was hospitalized in the US.
- 1987: After MGR’s death (December 24, 1987), AIADMK split into two factions—one led by Jayalalithaa and the other by MGR’s wife Janaki Ramachandran.
3. AIADMK Leader & First Woman Opposition Leader (1989) 🏛️
- In 1989, AIADMK was reunited under Jayalalithaa’s leadership.
- She contested in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections and became the first woman Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
- The infamous Assembly incident (March 25, 1989): She was assaulted by ruling party DMK MLAs, after which she vowed to return to the Assembly only as Chief Minister.
4. First Term as Chief Minister (1991-1996) 👑
- In 1991, AIADMK won a landslide victory with 225 out of 234 seats, supported by Congress and Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination wave.

- Introduced Cradle Baby Scheme to curb female infanticide.
- Free education for girls up to the college level.
- Introduced 60,000 women police personnel, making Tamil Nadu the first state with an all-women police station.
- However, corruption allegations and extravagant spending, including her lavish wedding for her foster son, led to her defeat in 1996.
5. Comeback & Multiple Terms as CM (2001-2016) 🔥
- 2001-2006: Re-elected as CM in 2001 but briefly removed due to a corruption case. She returned in 2002 after being acquitted.
- 2011-2016: She made a strong comeback, winning again in 2011 and 2016, breaking the trend of Tamil Nadu’s alternating rule between AIADMK and DMK.
- Key schemes introduced:
- Amma Canteens (subsidized food for the poor)
- Amma Water, Amma Pharmacy, Amma Cement
- Crackdown on crime and corruption
6. Conviction & Return to Power (2014-2015) ⚖️
