Khushbu Sundar, popularly known as Khushbu, is one of the most iconic actresses in South Indian cinema, especially known for her work in Tamil and Telugu films. With her charming screen presence, versatile acting, and ability to adapt to a variety of roles, Khushbu became one of the top heroines in the 1980s and 1990s. She later transitioned into a successful career in television and politics, becoming a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu.
Early Life:
Khushbu was born as Nandita Khushboo Sundar on September 29, 1970, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She hails from a Sindhi family, and her father, a businessman, was initially against her entry into the film industry. However, Khushbu developed an interest in acting from a young age and made her debut at the age of 16.
Entry into Cinema:
Khushbu made her acting debut in the Hindi film industry with the movie “Disha” in 1983, though the film did not make a significant impact. However, her real breakthrough came when she entered the South Indian film industries, particularly Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films.
Her first major success was in Telugu cinema with the film “Kalyana Mandapam” (1990), where she played the lead role. However, it was in Tamil cinema that Khushbu became a household name. Her pairing with top stars like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, M. G. Ramachandran (MGR), and Vijayakanth made her one of the most popular actresses in Tamil cinema in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Personal Life:
- Khushbu married film actor, director, and producer Sundar C in 2000.
- They have two daughters, Avanthika and Ananditha. Their production house is named Avni Cinemax, after their elder daughter.

- Cinema Express Awards: Won in 1991 for Best Actress for her role in Chinna Thambi and in 1996 for Best Actress for her role in Irattai Roja
- Tamil Nadu State Film Awards: Won in 1991 for Creative Award for Best Actress for her role in Chinna Thambi
- Kalaimamani Honour: Received in 1994–95 for her contribution to the film industry
- TSR-TV9 National Film Awards: Won in 2018 for Tamil Outstanding Actress.
Transition to Television and Politics:
After retiring from films, Khushbu transitioned to a career in television. She became a popular television host and actress, appearing in numerous Tamil and Telugu serials. Her show “Khushbu’s Kitchen” was well-received, where she showcased her culinary skills and interacted with celebrities.
Khushbu also became involved in politics, joining the Indian National Congress (INC) in 2014. She became a vocal advocate for women’s rights and social justice. However, after a few years with Congress, Khushbu switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2020, marking a significant shift in her political career. Her entry into politics allowed her to remain in the public eye and continue her engagement with social issues, particularly women’s empowerment.
