Early Life and Family
Jayaprada was born on April 3, 1962, in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India, into a Telugu-speaking family. Her original name was Lalita Rani, but she later adopted the screen name Jayaprada when she entered the film industry. She was the eldest of three children. Jayaprada’s father was a teacher, and her family was not involved in the film industry, but she had a keen interest in acting and dance from a young age.
Her early education took place in Rajahmundry, and she was always inclined towards performing arts, particularly dancing. She trained in classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, which later influenced her acting career.
Entry into the Film Industry
Jayaprada made her acting debut at the age of 14 with the Telugu film “Bhoomikanya” (1976), where she played a supporting role. She initially appeared in minor roles and later gained attention for her graceful dancing and on-screen presence. Her big break came with the 1977 film “Siri Siri Muvva” in which she played the lead role. Her acting and screen presence were highly appreciated, and this film established her as a rising star in Telugu cinema.

In 1986, Jayaprada married film producer Srikant Nahata. The couple has a son, Sanjay Nahata. While she was actively involved in films, Jayaprada also focused on family life after her marriage. She was also involved in various charitable works and was well-respected for her humility and down-to-earth nature despite being a star.
Politics
After retiring from acting in the late 1990s, Jayaprada entered politics in 1994. She joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), led by N.T. Rama Rao, and became a member of the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the Indian Parliament). Later, she also joined the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and served as a Member of Parliament. Jayaprada was appointed as a member of the Women’s Empowerment Committee and contributed to political discourse, focusing on issues related to women, children, and social welfare.
