Dasari Narayana Rao was born into a poor family in the village of Palakollu, Andhra Pradesh. He was passionate about the arts from an early age, and his interest in theater and drama led him to pursue a career in filmmaking. His early struggles were characteristic of many filmmakers who rose from humble beginnings to attain greatness in the Indian film industry.

Early Career:

Narayana Rao initially worked as a theater artist before moving into the film industry. His interest in cinema led him to experiment with different roles within the industry, where he worked as an assistant director. His technical knowledge and storytelling skills gradually shaped him into a versatile director. He made a mark in the industry with his engaging narratives and his ability to connect with the audience.

Film career : 

Prior to films, Dasari worked in theatre staging plays. He entered film industry to become an actor but worked as ghost writer for 25 films and made his debut as dialogue writer with Jagath Jatteelu (1970) however it was Mohammed Bin Thuqlaq which gave him recognition.

Political career : 

Dasari was elected to the Rajya sabha in the year 2006. He became the Minister of state in Ministry of coal.Said to be a confidante of Indian National Congress President Sonia Gandi, Dasari once again became active in politics after National Congress Party came back to power in 2004.

Business : 

He launched a popular daily newspaper named Udayam to counter the effect of Ramoji Rao’s newspaper Eenadu.

AWARDS : 

National Awards:

1. National Film Award for Best Feature Film:
   • He won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film for “Siri Siri Muvva” in 1976. This was one of his notable films which earned national recognition.
2. National Film Award – Best Direction:
   • He received recognition for his work in the film industry at the national level for his innovative storytelling and contributions to cinema.

State Awards:

1. Nandi Awards (State Awards for Telugu Cinema):
   • Best Director: Dasari Narayana Rao won several Nandi Awards for Best Director across different years, including for films like “Premabhishekam” (1981) and “Rakhshasudu” (1978).
   • Best Film: He won the Best Film award for his films that were commercially successful and critically acclaimed.
   • Best Producer: As a producer, he also received accolades in the Best Producer category.

Death : 

Dasari Narayana Rao died on 30 May 2017 from prolonged illness, at the age of 75. His last rites were performed with full state honours. His funeral was held at his farmhouse in Moinabad village, Ranga Reddy district, where his wife Padma was cremated.
