His father, Surinder Kapoor, was a renowned producer and founder of the Asian Academy of Film & Television, and his elder brother, Boney Kapoor, is a successful film producer. He also has a younger brother, Sanjay Kapoor, who is an actor. Anil grew up in Chembur, Mumbai, where he attended Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and later graduated from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai.
