Robert De Niro was born in Manhattan, New York City, to artists Robert De Niro Sr. and Virginia Admiral. His parents separated when he was young. Raised in the Little Italy neighborhood, he developed a love for acting early on and attended acting schools such as Stella Adler Conservatory and Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio, where he learned method acting.
Career Breakthrough & Rise to Fame
De Niro started his career in the 1960s with small film roles but gained recognition with Bang the Drum Slowly (1973). His breakthrough came when he played the young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II (1974), winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
